Hello everyone!

I can’t think of anyone who does not want to have a strong, vibrant immune system, especially at this time! This is why we are focusing once more on the practice of the Sun Salutation. Check out some of the many benefits you will receive from this practice:

The Sun Salutation (SS)  is a series 12 poses in a continuous flow, synchronizing breathing with body movement. If you practice only a little yoga each day, practice sun salutations! For people with limited time, sun salutations benefit most muscles and joints. This practice promotes balance and general wellbeing. My kids love practicing together!

Some Benefits of Sun Salutations (SS):

  • Sun Salutations are one of the best energization techniques. This perfect combination of stimulation and relaxation emphasizes breath and body awareness.
  • Yoga, especially SS, brings about a balance within the stress and relaxation response of the human body (sympathetic/parasympathetic control).
  • Very effective cardiovascular endurance training exercise and can be used effectively to increase muscle strength and general body endurance.
  • The alternate expansion and contraction of the chest during  SS postures helps in regulating and deepening respiration through the practice.
  • This cyclical practice of yogic postures in SS helps to loosen up joints and muscles in a short period of time.
  • Abdominal Organs are alternately stretched and compressed during SS postures. This ensures proper organ stimulation and functioning.
  • It improves spinal flexibility and results in improved immunity.

It is a fun way to start your day! Start with one or two rounds and add more repetitions gradually. You will feel great. As always, the use of a yoga mat is highly recommended. Also, as with any form of exercise, consult with your doctor before starting a new physical activity.

Research Studies:

1. Effect of Pranayama and Suryanamaskar (Sun Salutation) on Pulmonary Functions in Medical Students (Karthik, et al, J Clin Diagn Res. 2014 Dec; 8) showed that there is a statistically significant increase in all the above mentioned pulmonary functions following yoga training.

2. Evidence showed that 24 cycles of sun salutation, 6 days a week for 24 weeks produced statistically significant improvement in muscle strength and general body endurance in male and female subjects (Bhuktar, et. al, Asian J Sports Med. 2011 Dec; 2)

I hope you and your family enjoy this practice as much as we do! It is a great way to stay healthy.

Namaste,

Janice

If this is your first time practicing, please be extremely mindful as you proceed. Do only what feels comfortable to you. This means no pain or strain.  Use a Yoga mat if you have one.

I hope you can practice together with your kids!  We have included a picture of the sequence for your convenience. Start with one round. As you progress, you can add more repetitions. Remember to be gentle and stop is you feel any strain.
