Expect to be moved out of your seats! \nWeek One: From Bondage to Resistance: The Evolution of African American Music \nAfrican American music is not merely a collection of genres; it is a historical record of resilience and survival beginning with the trauma of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. When enslaved Africans were forcibly brought to the Americas\, they were stripped of their possessions but carried their musical traditions\, rhythms\, and communal singing practices. These roots eventually blossomed into the foundational genres of American music\, serving as both a source of spiritual solace and a tool for political resistance. Both field songs and spirituals used rich imagery and emotional intensity to impart themes of joy\, suffering\, and longing\, often employing double meanings and subtle metaphors as a means of “signifying” the Africans’ true desires and poking fun at their white masters. DESCRIPTION:How would you like to express your musical talent? That’s what happens with Open Mic Night\, every first Thursday of the month at 7 pm. There’s talent\, creativity\, emotion\, connection\, courage\, and fun! All are welcome to sing\, play – or just enjoy the music! \nThere are two ways you can participate\nIN-PERSON in the Fellowship Hall\nThere will be a sign-up sheet available on Thursday – everyone is invited to select a song to play/sing or accompany others. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Unity will provide a PA with inputs for instruments and USB as well as microphones\, so individuals can choose to use instruments\, play solo\, or sing along to recorded music. \nVIA PRE-RECORDED VIDEO\nSend a video recording of your performance to the unityavteam@unitytriangle.org by the Sunday before the third Thursday. Recording will be played during on site but will not be streamed. \nYour file will likely be too large for emailing\, so you’ll need to send it another way. People have had good results with wetransfer.com\, a free service. As enslaved people struggled through life on plantations\, they continued their traditional use of music and instruments. While they were often prohibited from having drums\, they used their own bodies to create rhythm which involved rhythmic clapping\, chest-slapping\, and foot-stomping.  Be prepared for the soulful singing and strong rhythmic accompaniment from the Unity Choir as we celebrate the origins of Gospel music\, which remains a cornerstone of the Black church today. \n\nOur 2026 theme is: In a World Divided\, Choose Unity!\nWith many special events\, topics\, and unique Sundays planned. DESCRIPTION:What is Reiki Healing?\nReiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low\, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress\, and if it is high\, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. \nThe word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” \nSunday Reiki Sessions for Congregants!\nAre you feeling out of balance or stressed? To support the spiritual growth of our congregation\, we are excited to offer Reiki energy healing to our community. Unity of the Triangle is blessed to have many Reiki healers in our congregation. They will be offering 15-minute Reiki Healing chair sessions once a month for the congregation on the third Sunday of every month in the Meditation Room upstairs. Sign up is required and will be available day-of at the Welcome Desk in the lobby before Sunday service. These sessions will be popular!
