Neusom Holmes\nPlus Honoring Black History Month & the Evolution of Black Music in America\nPresented by Unity Women of Color & The Unity Band\nThis week we’re starting a four-part series based on the book\, “All In This Together.” In his 2025 book\, Jack Kornfield shares teachings and stories that are perfect for this moment – stories and wise words that help us remember our basic goodness\, free ourselves from fear\, and pave a path to a world where we all belong. There are multiple ways to get involved in our 4-week book study. We hope you’ll join us for this personal transformation series and invite a friend to book club. \n*Note: You do not have to be reading the book to get value from the Sunday talk during the book study weeks!  \n\nBlack History Month At Unity\nFor the next four weeks\, Unity Women of Color are collaborating with The Unity Choir to present the historical significance of Black Music in America. Expect to be moved out of your seats! \nWeek One: From Bondage to Resistance: The Evolution of African American Music \nAfrican American music is not merely a collection of genres; it is a historical record of resilience and survival beginning with the trauma of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. When enslaved Africans were forcibly brought to the Americas\, they were stripped of their possessions but carried their musical traditions\, rhythms\, and communal singing practices. These roots eventually blossomed into the foundational genres of American music\, serving as both a source of spiritual solace and a tool for political resistance. Both field songs and spirituals used rich imagery and emotional intensity to impart themes of joy\, suffering\, and longing\, often employing double meanings and subtle metaphors as a means of “signifying” the Africans’ true desires and poking fun at their white masters. This is week three of a four-part series based on the book\, Don’t Believe Everything You Think. The main teaching of this book reminds us that we can separate pain from suffering. \nIn Don’t Believe Everything You Think\, Joseph Nguyen echoes Rumi’s idea of “the field beyond right and wrong” as the space where the mind’s judgments fall away and pure awareness remains. It’s the place within us that exists before thought — where peace\, love\, and connection are not earned or argued for\, but naturally present. When we stop dividing experiences into good or bad\, right or wrong\, we reconnect with that deeper consciousness that sees all as part of one flow. In this field\, we don’t have to win or defend — we simply are\, resting in the truth beneath all opinions and beliefs. \n*Note: You do not have to be reading the book to get value from the Sunday talk during the book study weeks\, but we think you’ll really enjoy the book!  \nRead more about the book study and how to participate in a weekly book study group led by Rev. You can watch online 11am Sunday service or on Facebook or Youtube. \nFood\, Conversation and Community in the Fellowship Hall after service! \n12:15pm: 1-on-1 with a Prayer Chaplain.
