Why Self-Reliance and Mind-Body Wellness Matter

By Rev. Michael Gadway

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food – Hippocrates

The Growing Shift Away from Traditional Healthcare Solutions Towards Holistic Health

There is a reformation of thought rising from the discontent created by the current health-care model. We no longer believe there is a pill to cure us: a “magic bullet” waiting to solve all that ails us. This shift has led many to explore holistic health as a way to reclaim control over our well-being. Slowly, inevitably, the realization that we must take back our right to choose the kind of health-care we participate in is pervading our culture. If we wait for others to change the system, we will never experience the divine expression of God that is waiting to burst forth from within us.

Why Personal Responsibility Is the Foundation of True Health

Each of us must become Self-reliant. It is our duty to be our own care givers. No one can do for us what we must do for ourselves. To begin this transformation of awareness about our health, the first step is to discontinue the mistaken belief there is a God or a Doctor or anyone outside ourselves that will step into our lives and restore us to health. There is no external force, no power, no being, good or evil, that causes our problems or solves them. We and we alone are the creators of our current perceived states. If we choose to wait for an external authority to save us and we never take the steps required towards Self-reliance, we are fated to stagnation and all that is ours will be denied us.

How Self-Awareness Shapes Health, Happiness, and Inner Peace

If “the kingdom of heaven lies within us,” so too does the kingdom of hell. Heaven and hell, joy and despair, health and disease, are states of awareness. Our perceptions of experiences are solely dependent on choice. The more aware of this truth we are, the more unrestricted we become to express authentically. All we need is waiting silently in the deep stillness within us. To be Self-aware, Self-Reliant and therefore content, healthy, and prosperous should be the goal of us all. In achieving this, we achieve ideal health.

Why Chronic Illness Requires More Than Prescription Medication

The existing medical model is failing in most ways. However, contrary to popular belief, neither the insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical doctors, nor the AMA are to blame. They have succeeded in making our emergency care system and our surgery protocols some of the best in the world. The responsibility for the failure of healthcare rests squarely on our own shoulders. We have for too long expected others to take care of us. We have delegated the responsibility of our health care, and we are now paying the price. For many decades, we have gone to medical doctors with problems caused by chronic poor behaviors and expected them to cure us with a pill. Humanity is discovering that there are no sometime side-effects with synthetic medications; instead, there are always effects. All synthetic medications have negative consequences and it is a matter of weighing the need against those consequences. It is the individual’s responsibility to understand the actions of each consumed drug, and the negative effects it produces.

The Connection Between Mind, Body, Spirit, and Overall Wellness

The notion that an event happens in the body in isolation is obsolete. We know what influences one metabolic system also influences another or several others, and those medications, synthetic or natural, always affect the organism as a whole. We know our emotions play a dynamic role in our health. Stress, diet and lifestyle must all be taken into consideration when addressing health concerns. Our spiritual life should nurture and support us as the keystone of our existence. We are complex and integrated systems whose health must be approached from an undivided perspective. Our bodies are unable to reconcile duplicity. The level of integration between spirit, mind and body is always reflected in our clarity and health or lack thereof.

Why Holistic Healing Is Essential for Long-Term Health

It is not possible to cure a chronic health care disorder with a pill! There is no substitute for holistic care. Spirit, mind, body medicine is no longer the alternative; it is the imperative. We are fast learning that the current model of chronic health care will disappoint, frustrate, and often worsen the conditions we have created by long-term poor health choices.

Reclaiming Accountability for Your Physical and Mental Well-Being

The current era requires us to take back responsibility for how we think, feel, and act. To restore personal accountability is vital to our well-being. The individual, and only the individual, not the doctors or the government or our relatives, is the designer of his or her health care model. Health-brick by health-brick, we build the bodies and minds in which we live. In order for unrestricted expression of the Soul, the mental and physical temples we live in and express through must be clean and well cared for.

Self-Determination and Holistic Living: The Path to Lasting Health and Purpose

Chronic medical problems require a shift from an external locus of authority to an internal one. When we give up Self-determinism and allow an outside source to dictate the healthcare actions we take, we suffer.

Taking care of our minds and bodies allows God, expressing as the Soul, to create living art. Each life can be a work of art, a thing of beauty, a thing which lifts up all who see it: a perfect example of God’s eternal sculpture.

What if Dharma Begins Where Approval Ends?

By Rev. Michael Gadway

Dharma is not upheld by talking about it. Dharma is upheld by living in harmony with it. – Gautama Buddha

Breaking Free from the Need for External Validation

We spend so much time looking at ourselves through the world’s eyes, we lose our natural, intuitive ability to see into the depths of our own being. We have become enamored of the physical and material aspects of life. In our relentless pursuit of approval, success, and emotional gratification from the material world, we have forgotten the one thing we want most: to rest in the awareness of our true Self.

The desire to belong, to fit in, to step up and “be somebody” in the world, so constrains our view of Spirit that it is life-denying rather than life-affirming. When we set our egoistic aspirations above our Soul longings, we drown the truth of our being in the mediocrity of society. This impulse reveals itself in two ways: as those who wish to fit in and belong and as those who spend their time trying to be different and special. Both have missed the callings of the Soul.

When we constantly search for guidance and approval from an external locus of authority rather than an internal one, our inner vitality is eroded and we disempower our life force. The corresponding Soul-devaluation affects the essential fabric of our lives. The scope of our perception is then limited to a Soul numbing restricted view of the world and ourselves, and with it, we lose the joy and contentment secreted in the profoundness of being.

Discovering Your True Self Through Dharma

To counter this loss of Self-reliance and Self-awareness, we must discover and declare our intrinsic spiritual value to ourselves. We must learn to create and hold a sacred space within us and then stand strong in this inner sanctum with or without the world’s praise; this is the true meaning of Self-reliance. To dwell in this innermost tabernacle is to be established in our dharma. It becomes that which we invoke and that which sustains us. The vast spiritual space within us speaks in whispers, Soul urgings, and intuitions. This relationship with the indwelling Infinite becomes the foundation of our lives. It guides and supports, suggests and demands, pushes and pulls us towards the Source, and it fulfills our every need.

The Meaning and Evolution of Dharma in Spiritual Tradition

If we trace the origin of the term dharma, we discover that it meant simply, the law: the law of the cosmos and of nature. It was the basic principle in ritualistic worship and it inferred a transactional-karmic relationship with God; if we do this, we get that. If we sacrifice something important to us, we are rewarded with something even greater. We give to get. This theologically underdeveloped relationship with the God of the Old Testament still exists today.

Though it is a spiritually immature framework for relating to God, many people in prayer offer God something if they will only answer their prayers the way they want them to. We see this same now defunct spiritual model in the new thought movement as well. “If I think this way, I get what I want from life.” The mistaken belief that because we are individual units of Spirit, we can manipulate the world, blurs our awareness of our dharma which is found in the bliss of surrender, not in creating a world reactive to our egos.

What Is The Modern Usage of Dharma and Life Purpose

In the Rig Veda, dharma was referred to as the “pillars” of creation and there was little moral character applied to its meaning. But over the millennia, the term dharma evolved to signify one’s moral duty or righteous conduct. It began to have social and religious implications. Dharma took on ethical tones as the term law began to be applied to peoples’ daily behaviors. It was then adopted by the Buddhist and Jain movements before sweeping across Asia and eventually making its way into western lexicon.

As it was adapted into modern usage, it evolved to mean spiritual law, righteous living, and life’s purpose. The term dharma represents the need for us to find what unites us to God in life, work, and relationships. It is the universal and personal realization that there is an organizing principle that binds us all.

Living Your Dharma as an Expression of the Divine

The Buddhist scholar Rupert Gethin defines dharma as “The basis of things.” Dharma is the foundation of our lives. It is, in a real sense, the internal structural core and interior functional framework from which we view and interact with life.

Dharma is the living, spiritual story we inhabit. It is the timely woven thread of the Divine, and it runs through the fabric and tapestry of our being. Our journey is not to discover our dharma. Our journey is the reflection of our dharma and it does not come from an outward source. It is not mediated through church, minister, or therapist. Our walk in the world is the unfolding of our dharma. Our story is the sojourn of dharma, and the path before us is our dharma unfolding as a wondrous divine incongruity. It is the demonstration of our relationship with the Infinite. Realized in the depths of our true essence-of-being, dharma is God expressing through us, for us, and as us.

What is The Bhagavad Gita?

The Bhagavad Gita is one of the world’s most beloved spiritual texts, offering timeless wisdom for anyone seeking deeper meaning, inner peace, and a more awakened way of living. Set on a battlefield, the story unfolds as a conversation between the warrior Arjuna and the divine teacher Krishna, who guides him through fear, doubt, purpose, and the deeper nature of the soul. While its rooted in the Hindu tradition, the Gita speaks to universal human questions: Why am I here? How do I live with courage and compassion? How can I find peace in a changing world? All questions we regularly explore at Unity of the Triangle.

Opportunity for Personal Transformation

For spiritual seekers, the Bhagavad Gita is less about religion and more about transformation. It teaches that every person carries a divine essence within and that spiritual growth comes through self-awareness, love, service, meditation, and conscious action. The Gita invites us to live fully in the world without becoming consumed by fear, attachment, or ego — offering a path toward greater clarity, purpose, and connection with the sacred presence within all life.

If you’ve ever been to a class with Rev. Michael, you know he has a way of making sacred text accessible. We invite you to explore the Spiritual Education section of the website for further resources and Michael’s blog.
